What is the difference between gingivitis and periodontitis?
Gingivitis is inflammation of the surface layer of the gum only. The bone and ligaments are not affected, so the changes are reversible. Periodontitis begins when the inflammation spreads deeper and destroys the tissues that hold the tooth.
Why do my gums bleed when I brush my teeth?
It is one of the early signs of inflammation, most often gingivitis or periodontitis. Bleeding is not normal, even if it has been going on for a long time. You need an exam by a periodontist and a professional cleaning.
What is gum curettage, and when is it needed?
Curettage is cleaning the periodontal pocket of tartar below the gumline and inflamed tissue at a depth that regular hygiene cannot reach. It is prescribed when the measurement during the consultation shows pocket depth of 4 mm or more.
Why is splinting of loose teeth needed?
Splinting joins several teeth into a single unit with a fiberglass band and redistributes the chewing load. This slows down loosening and helps keep the teeth longer if periodontitis has partly destroyed the ligaments.
Why does periodontitis cause no pain for so long?
The tissues break down slowly and the nerve of the tooth is not involved, so there is no pain signal. The changes become noticeable when the teeth start to loosen. By that stage a significant part of the bone is already lost.
Do diabetes and smoking affect gum health?
Yes. Diabetes slows healing, so inflammation progresses faster. Smoking narrows the blood vessels and masks bleeding, so the disease is found at a late stage. Tell your dentist about your general health during the consultation.
