How is a periodontist different from a general dentist?
A general dentist treats the teeth themselves: cavities, pulpitis, rebuilding the crown of the tooth. A periodontist works with the tissues around the tooth: the gums, ligaments and bone. A tooth can be healthy yet lose its support to periodontitis, which is why the two fields complement each other.
Does measuring periodontal pockets hurt?
Probing is done with a blunt, graduated instrument, and with healthy gums you barely feel it. With pronounced inflammation there may be brief discomfort and slight bleeding. If your gums are very sensitive, the dentist applies a topical anesthetic.
Can periodontitis be cured?
Lost bone cannot be restored, but the process can be stopped and kept under control. The goal of treatment is to remove the cause of inflammation, reduce pocket depth and keep your teeth. With consistent hygiene and regular checkups, teeth last for years.
Will treatment start right during the consultation?
Treatment usually starts at the next visit: first the dentist reviews the probing and X-ray findings. The exception is an acute condition with pain or pus, in which case you get help right away. You receive the plan with prices and decide for yourself when to start.
How often should I see a periodontist?
With healthy gums, a checkup every 6 months together with a professional cleaning is enough. If periodontitis has been diagnosed, the dentist sets an individual schedule, usually every 3–6 months.
How do I prepare for the consultation?
No special preparation is needed. Brush your teeth as usual, but skip the mouthwash and do not scrub your gums extra hard the day before: the dentist needs to see the real picture. Let us know about any chronic conditions, pregnancy and the medications you take.

How much a periodontist consultation costs
A consultation with a treatment plan costs 500 UAH, and this amount does not depend on how complex your case is. An X-ray may be needed separately: without it there is no way to assess bone level, so the dentist tells you right away if one is required.

Should I see a periodontist if my gums do not hurt
Yes. Bleeding gums rarely go away on their own: most people simply stop noticing. And the breakdown of the supporting tissues is slow and painless, so complaints appear only once the teeth are already loose.
