Which is better: braces or clear aligners?
Braces are more effective for complex bite problems and crowded teeth. Clear aligners are nearly invisible and removable, but they suit mild to moderate cases. The dentist makes the final choice after diagnostics and a bite analysis.
At what age can a child get braces?
Treatment with braces usually starts after the baby teeth have been replaced by permanent ones, at around 11–12 years. A first preventive checkup with an orthodontist is recommended earlier, at 6–7 years.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
Depending on the complexity of the case, 12 to 24 months of active treatment. After that comes the retention period: you wear retainers to keep the result in place.
Does getting braces hurt?
Having braces fitted is usually easy to tolerate. For the first few days after fitting or an archwire change, you may feel mild discomfort when chewing. This is a normal reaction of the teeth to the new load, and it passes quickly.
Why wear retainers after the braces come off?
After active treatment, teeth tend to drift back toward their old position. Retainers, either fixed wires or removable trays, hold the result you have achieved. Without a retention period, the result of treatment can be lost.
Can an adult have their bite corrected?
Yes, there is no age limit for orthodontic treatment. Braces and clear aligners move teeth in adults just as they do in teenagers. The dentist chooses the method after an exam.

Why correct the bite
A correct bite matters for more than the look of your smile. It affects the health of the jaw joints and spreads the chewing load evenly across the teeth. The orthodontist chooses the correction method, braces or clear aligners, based on your anatomy. There is no age limit for treatment: we correct the bite for teenagers and adults alike.
Metal, ceramic or self-ligating braces
Metal braces are the most affordable option, and they work for complex cases too. Ceramic braces are hard to notice on the teeth but slightly more fragile, so with severe crowding the dentist may suggest another system. Damon (Ormco) self-ligating braces have no ligatures: there is less friction and fewer visits to the dentist. Clear aligners are nearly invisible and removable, and they suit mild to moderate cases.
