The orthodontist studies 3D images and a lateral cephalometric X-ray and draws up a step-by-step treatment plan.
Before the braces go on, the teeth are professionally cleaned and any cavities are treated.
Metal brackets are bonded to each tooth.
The archwire is threaded into the brackets and held in place with ligatures.
Every 3–4 weeks the orthodontist adjusts the archwire tension and replaces the ligatures, and the teeth gradually straighten. On average, treatment takes 1 to 2 years.

How long does treatment with metal braces take?
On average, 1 to 2 years. The exact time depends on how complex the bite problem is, your age and how closely you keep to the schedule of orthodontist visits.
Do metal braces hurt?
For the first 3–7 days after bonding or an archwire adjustment you may feel slight pressure and some discomfort when chewing. This is normal: the teeth are starting to move, and the feeling passes quickly.
How often do I need to see the orthodontist?
Every 3–4 weeks. At these visits the orthodontist checks how the teeth are moving and replaces the archwire and the elastic ligatures.
Does enamel get damaged under braces?
The braces themselves and the orthodontic adhesive do not harm the enamel. To protect your teeth, brush them thoroughly at home with special brushes, interdental brushes and a water flosser, and have professional cleanings regularly.
Why do I need a retainer and a tray after the braces come off?
After the braces come off, the bone around the roots needs time to stabilize. A fixed retainer and a clear tray hold the teeth in their new position and keep them from drifting back.

Who metal braces are right for
Metal braces are the choice when you need a sturdy, predictable appliance. They handle complex bite problems and severely crowded teeth. Because the brackets are so strong, these braces are often recommended for teenagers and people with an active lifestyle. They are also the most affordable type of braces. If a less visible appliance matters more to you, the orthodontist will tell you about ceramic and self-ligating systems and compare them with metal.
Metal, ceramic or Damon: what is the difference
All three systems work on the same principle: brackets on the teeth and an archwire that gradually moves them. What differs is the material and the way the archwire is held. Metal braces are the strongest and the most affordable. Ceramic brackets are matched to the color of your enamel, so they are barely visible. In self-ligating Damon braces a built-in door holds the archwire instead of elastics, so visits are needed less often. The orthodontist decides which system is right for you after diagnostics.
What the cost of braces depends on
The price of treatment is more than the braces themselves. It includes bonding the braces, scheduled adjustments every 3–4 weeks, removal, and retention appliances after treatment. Braces are priced per jaw. The orthodontist works out all the costs before treatment starts, with no hidden fees. You can pay in stages: separately for placement, adjustments and removal.
