What we treat and how: pick a step
When the ligaments around the root break down, a pocket of 4 mm or deeper forms between the tooth and the gum, where a toothbrush cannot reach.
Deposits above the gum line are removed first, otherwise they would be pushed deep into the pocket during curettage.
Under local anesthesia, an ultrasonic scaler and curettes remove tartar below the gum line, plaque and granulation tissue, and the root surface is smoothed.
The pocket is rinsed with an antiseptic and, if needed, an anti-inflammatory medication is applied.
The gums fit more tightly against the tooth and the pocket shrinks. After 7–10 days the dentist measures its depth again.
Deposits above the gum line
Plaque and tartar on the tooth above the edge of the gum.
Tartar below the gum line
Hard tartar on the root inside the pocket.
Periodontal pocket
A gap between the tooth and the gum — 4 mm or deeper.
Granulation tissue
Inflamed tissue that replaces the destroyed ligaments and keeps the inflammation going.
Tooth surface
Deposits above the gum line have been removed during the professional cleaning.
Tartar below the gum line
Stays in the pocket: it is removed during curettage.
Cleaning instrument
Removes deposits above the edge of the gum.
Curette
The instrument used to clean the pocket to its full depth.
Root
Tartar and plaque removed, root surface smoothed.
Pocket wall
Granulation tissue removed so the gum can fit tightly against the tooth.
Antiseptic
The pocket is rinsed and, if needed, an anti-inflammatory medication is applied.
Cleaned pocket
Tartar, plaque and granulation tissue removed.
Gums
Fit more tightly against the tooth.
The depth decreases — that is the whole point of the procedure.
Former gum line
Once the inflammation is gone, the gums become firmer and may sit lower, especially around the front teeth.
Closed curettage is the cleaning of periodontal pockets 4 mm or deeper to remove tartar below the gum line, plaque and granulation tissue, done under local anesthesia and followed by antiseptic treatment of the pocket.

A professional cleaning removes deposits from the tooth surface and just below the gum line. Curettage treats the pocket to its full depth, including the root surface and granulation tissue. A cleaning is preventive; curettage is a treatment.
The procedure is done under local anesthesia. For a few days afterward the treated gums may feel sensitive or sore. This is a normal tissue response that gradually goes away.
Curettage is usually done in segments, a few teeth per visit, so as not to overload the tissues or make the appointment too long. The number of visits depends on how many teeth need treatment. The dentist sets the schedule after taking measurements.
Closed curettage is done without cutting the gum: the instruments go directly into the pocket. It is less invasive and suits moderate pocket depths. If the pockets are very deep, the dentist discusses a surgical approach and its cost with you separately.
For the first two hours, do not eat or drink anything hot while the anesthesia is still working. For 3–5 days avoid hard, spicy and very hot food, and do not smoke. Brush your teeth from day one, with a soft toothbrush and without pressing on the treated area.
Periodontitis is a chronic condition, so with deep pockets the procedure is sometimes repeated after a while. What matters most is maintenance care: a cleaning every 3–6 months and follow-up measurements help keep the pockets from deepening again.

I had a professional teeth cleaning with Dr. Olena Vitaliivna and was very pleased! The doctor was extremely attentive and caring, kept asking how I was feeling throughout the procedure and worked very gently. The procedure was quick and comfortable, and the result exceeded my expectations — my teeth are perfectly clean and even look whiter. I also want to thank the administrator for her friendliness and attention. She advised me on mouthwashes and recommended a treatment product that I could buy right there at the dental office, which was very convenient. I sincerely recommend this dental practice!
A very conveniently located dental office🤩 easy to get to, the administrator Olha is friendly, and they cleaned my teeth very professionally👍😍 thank you
I had my teeth cleaned at this dental office and was absolutely delighted. The procedure was quick, gentle and without any discomfort. My teeth are now smooth and clean, and the doctor also gave useful advice on care at home. Thank you for the service!
The most comfortable tartar removal I've ever had. The doctor also told me about problem areas worth paying attention to. A big plus is that they don't invent problems you don't have. I want to come back again.
Dr. Tetiana Viacheslavivna did a full professional hygiene treatment, and I liked it very much — quick and painless, and my teeth feel nice and smooth) Thank you!

We had an appointment with Dr. Olesia Volodymyrivna. The doctor carefully examined my two children and found gum inflammation in my son; a baby tooth needed to be removed. And the child had no complaints at all. We're very grateful that the doctor noticed the bad tooth in time!
I really liked this dental office. I came as an emergency (I urgently needed help on a Sunday evening). They booked me quickly and with understanding of the situation. A tooth with a complicated history (gum surgery, long treatment and prosthetics), and all of it was done in…

Curettage makes sense where measurements have shown pockets of 4 mm or deeper, or where there are deposits below the gum line that a regular cleaning cannot remove. Warning signs are bleeding that persists after a cleaning and good home care, discharge from under the gums, bad breath, receding gums and loose teeth. Sometimes curettage is needed to stabilize the gums before dentures or implants.
If the inflammation is limited to the surface of the gum, the procedure will not help: in that case the treatment is for gingivitis.
When the ligaments around the root break down, the body fills the space with granulation tissue. It is loose and well supplied with blood, but it does not hold the tooth. Instead, it keeps the chronic inflammation going and stops the gum from fitting tightly against the root.
As long as granulation tissue stays in the pocket, antiseptics and rinses give only a temporary effect. That is why during curettage the dentist not only removes tartar but also takes out this tissue.
Before treatment, swollen gums cover part of the root, so the recession is not visible. After the granulation tissue is removed and the inflammation subsides, the tissue becomes firmer and shrinks in volume, so the gums settle at their true level.
Many people see this as a setback, although the tissues are actually healthier: the pocket is smaller and the gums fit tightly against the tooth again. It is mostly noticeable only around the front teeth.
Curettage is done at the Eurozet locations in Obolon (21 Levka Lukianenka St, Minska metro station), Pozniaky (14B Kniazhyi Zaton St, Osokorky metro station) and Pechersk (12 Henerala Almazova St, Pecherska metro station). The procedure is usually split into several visits, so it helps that all three locations are open every day from 9:00 to 21:00. You pay only for the teeth with deep pockets: per the price list, 450 UAH per tooth including antiseptic treatment. Extensive treatment can be paid in installments through PrivatBank.
