Receding gums and exposed tooth necks

Periodontosis treatment in Kyiv

Periodontosis is a non-inflammatory condition of the tissues around the tooth, in which the necks and roots of the teeth gradually become exposed. The dentist confirms the diagnosis, slows the process down and relieves sensitivity.

Periodontosis

Step 1 of 5

The tissues around the tooth gradually shrink without any inflammation: the gums recede and expose the necks and roots of the teeth.

The dentist measures the depth of the gum sulcus and assesses the bone on a panoramic X-ray to tell periodontosis from periodontitis.

After a professional cleaning, the exposed tooth necks are treated with a course of remineralizing and desensitizing agents.

Wedge-shaped defects and exposed areas near the gum line are restored with cosmetic restoration when indicated.

A soft toothbrush, toothpaste for sensitive teeth and sweeping strokes from the gum toward the edge of the tooth.

  1. 1

    Exposed tooth neck

Sensitive to cold, sour food and brushing.

  2. 2

    Wedge-shaped defect

A notch in the tooth near the gum line.

  3. 3

    Gums

Firm and pale, do not bleed, but reduced in volume.

  4. 4

    Former gum line

The gums recede evenly, and the teeth look longer.

  1. 1

    Probe

Measures the depth of the gum sulcus.

  2. 2

    Bone level

The dentist assesses it on a panoramic X-ray.

  1. 1

    Exposed tooth neck

It is coated with remineralizing and desensitizing agents.

  2. 2

    Applicator

The agents are applied in a course.

  1. 1

    Restoration

    Fills the wedge-shaped defect.

  2. 2

    Area near the gum line

When indicated, it is also rebuilt with a restoration.

  1. 1

    Soft toothbrush

Do not press hard: too much pressure speeds up gum recession.

  2. 2

    Stroke from gum to edge

Sweeping strokes instead of horizontal scrubbing.

How we treat periodontosis

An accurate diagnosis

True periodontosis is rare. Measurements and an X-ray show whether it is actually periodontitis.

Sensitivity relief

The exposed tooth necks are treated with a course of remineralizing and desensitizing agents.

Repairing defects

Wedge-shaped defects and exposed areas near the gum line are restored with cosmetic restoration.

The right brushing technique

The dentist picks a soft toothbrush and toothpaste for sensitive teeth, and corrects how you move the brush.

How periodontosis treatment goes

A checkup every 6 months: how the recession is progressing can only be seen from repeat measurements.

  1. 1

    Diagnostics

Measurement of the gum sulcus depth and a panoramic X-ray to tell periodontosis from periodontitis.

  2. 2

    Professional cleaning

Deposits that irritate the exposed areas are removed. The cleaning is done gently.

  3. 3

    Sensitivity relief

A course of remineralizing and desensitizing agents on the exposed tooth necks.

  4. 4

    Repairing defects

Cosmetic restoration of wedge-shaped defects when indicated.

  5. 5

    Home care

A toothbrush of the right firmness, toothpaste for sensitive teeth and a corrected brushing technique.

Frequently asked questions

Can periodontosis be cured?

The tissues cannot be returned to their original state: the process is degenerative by nature. But it can be slowed down considerably, the sensitivity relieved and the exposed areas rebuilt with restorations. With regular monitoring, the teeth stay firm for a long time.

Will I lose my teeth with periodontosis?

Unlike periodontitis, teeth with periodontosis stay firm for a long time, since there is no active inflammation. Looseness appears only in the late stages. That is why it is worth getting the process under control as early as possible.

What is the difference between periodontosis and periodontitis?

Periodontitis is inflammation: the gums swell and bleed, pockets form and the teeth loosen. With periodontosis there is no inflammation, the gums are firm and pale, and the recession is even and slow. They cannot be told apart by eye; measurements and an X-ray are needed.

Will toothpaste for sensitive teeth help?

It reduces sensitivity by sealing the open tubules in the dentin, but it does nothing about the cause of the recession. Such toothpastes are appropriate as an everyday home product alongside treatment, not instead of it.

Do I need a professional cleaning if I have almost no tartar?

Yes. Even small deposits on exposed roots irritate the tissues and speed up the process, and the root surface holds plaque more readily than enamel. With periodontosis the cleaning is done more gently, taking sensitivity into account.

Can I get dentures or implants with periodontosis?

Yes, but only after the amount of bone has been assessed: that is what determines the options for implants. Prosthetic work takes into account the exposed necks of the supporting teeth. The dentist makes the decision based on an X-ray during the consultation.

I had a professional teeth cleaning with Dr. Olena Vitaliivna and was very pleased! The doctor was extremely attentive and caring, kept asking how I was feeling throughout the procedure and worked very gently. The procedure was quick and comfortable, and the result exceeded my expectations — my teeth are perfectly clean and even look whiter. I also want to thank the administrator for her friendliness and attention. She advised me on mouthwashes and recommended a treatment product that I could buy right there at the dental office, which was very convenient. I sincerely recommend this dental practice!

Why exposed tooth necks react to cold

The root of a tooth is not covered by enamel. It is protected by a thin layer of cementum, which wears away quickly, and beneath it lies dentin with microscopic tubules leading to the nerve. When the gums recede, stimulation from cold air, sour food or the touch of a toothbrush reaches the nerve endings directly. That is why the sensitivity can be sharp even in teeth without cavities.

To avoid making it worse, do not press hard on the toothbrush and do not brush right after acidic drinks: wait at least 30 minutes.

Periodontosis or periodontitis: why you should not diagnose yourself

"Periodontosis" is a diagnosis patients most often give themselves, although in real practice it is rare. Measurements frequently reveal periodontitis instead, and then the approach is completely different: with inflammation, the core of treatment is cleaning the pockets, while with periodontosis that approach makes no sense.

That is why the dentist does not prescribe anything until measurements and an X-ray have shown the nature of the process. Everything that follows depends on it.

What the cost of periodontosis treatment depends on

It all comes down to the amount of work. For some people a professional cleaning and a course of remineralization is enough, while others need several wedge-shaped defects rebuilt with cosmetic restoration. How many areas are affected only becomes clear after diagnostics.

That is why the dentist gives you the exact price once the nature of the process is clear, and you receive a plan listing the procedures before treatment begins. Prices for cleaning, restoration and X-rays are on the Prices page.
