A CT scan of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) produces a three-dimensional image of the joint. From it, the dentist assesses the condyles, the sockets and the width of the joint space.

What we treat and how: pick a step
Anatomy
A CT scan produces a three-dimensional image of the joint: it can be viewed from any angle and in slices less than 1 mm thick.
The closed-mouth scan shows the resting position of the condyle and the width of the joint space.
The open-mouth scan shows how the condyle moves when you chew or talk.
The joints work as a pair, so the dentist compares the right and left sides: whether the condyles sit symmetrically and how wide the joint spaces are.
A CT scan reveals deformed condyles, arthritic changes, bone spurs (osteophytes), uneven joint spaces, dislocations and the aftermath of injuries.
Joint socket
A hollow in the temporal bone where the condyle sits.
Condyle
The top of the lower jaw, which moves within the socket.
Slices
The joint can be viewed in slices less than 1 mm thick.
Lower jaw
The joint connects it to the temporal bone.
Joint space
The gap between the condyle and the socket. The dentist measures its width.
Condyle
With the mouth closed, its resting position is visible.
Condyle with the mouth open
The scan shows where it ends up when the mouth is open.
Movement
The dentist assesses how the condyle moves within the joint.
Resting position
Compared with the open-mouth position.
Right joint
The dentist assesses the condyle, the joint space and the bone.
Left joint
Compared with the right one to spot asymmetry.
Bone spur
A bony outgrowth on the condyle.
Deformed condyle
A misshapen condyle and arthritic changes are visible on the 3D model.
Joint space
The dentist compares the spaces on both sides: asymmetry also shows on a CT scan.
A CT scan of the jaw joint (TMJ) is a 3D image of the joint taken on a cone beam CT scanner, from which the dentist assesses the condyles, the sockets and the width of the joint space. One or both joints are scanned, with the mouth open and closed if needed; a CT scan of one joint costs 700 UAH.

One or both joints
if needed, with the mouth open and closedThe parts of the joint can be viewed from any angle, revealing hidden changes.
Scanning both sides shows whether the condyles sit symmetrically.
Open- and closed-mouth scans show how the condyle moves when you open your mouth.
The dentist takes the condition of the joint into account when planning braces or clear aligners.
No special preparation is needed, and the scan takes 10–20 seconds.
You take off metal jewelry and accessories from your head.
You are positioned in the scanner so that your head stays still.
The joint is scanned, in two jaw positions if needed.
The software builds a three-dimensional model of the jaw joints.
The dentist reviews the scan, and the 3D file is saved to a digital drive.
Prices are per the price list. The dentist draws up a treatment plan with costs after an exam and diagnostics.
If the joint clicks, pops or grinds when you chew or open your mouth. If you feel pain in your temples, cheeks, neck or near your ear when you move your jaw. If your mouth does not open fully or your jaw locks. A CT scan is also done before orthodontic treatment, before dentures or crowns and bite correction, and when a dislocation, arthrosis, arthritis or a joint injury is suspected.
An X-ray gives a flat image on which bone structures can overlap one another. A CT scan creates a 3D model: the bony structure of the joint can be viewed from any angle and in slices less than 1 mm thick.
The jaw joints work as a pair. The dentist needs to compare whether the condyles sit symmetrically, how wide the joint spaces are and what condition the bone is in on both sides.
This is a functional study. The closed-mouth scan shows the resting position of the condyle, and the open-mouth scan shows how it moves within the socket when you chew or talk.
Deformed condyles, arthritic changes, bone spurs (osteophytes), uneven joint spaces, dislocations and partial dislocations, and the aftermath of injuries.
No special preparation is needed. Before the scan, remove metal jewelry (earrings, necklaces, piercings) and removable dentures so they do not cause glare on the image.

They did my CT scan very quickly. Customer focus at the highest level: despite the unpredictable power outages, they called me and scheduled the appointment. I recommend them!
Quick, high-quality CT scan. The staff's explanations are polite and to the point, without small talk or fake smiles
I was at my first visit with Maryna Ihorivna, a very professional doctor. She showed me photos of my problem teeth, gave me clear advice and told me what needs to be worked on. They also did a CT scan, on which the doctor pointed everything out to me in more detail. Big thanks to the doctor's assistant too!
I'm very grateful to Eurozet for their speed. They booked me an appointment literally an hour after I contacted them. They did a CT scan, clearly explained the situation at that moment and made a further treatment plan. The staff are very friendly. Special thanks to the young woman at reception.

A misaligned bite almost always affects how the jaw joint works. When teeth are moved with braces or clear aligners, the load on the joint changes. That is why the orthodontist needs to know the condition of the joint before treatment begins. Using the 3D scan, the dentist plans the correction to avoid complications and pain. You can learn about treatment options at an orthodontist consultation.
Clicking or grinding in the jaw is easy to dismiss as nothing until the pain starts. But changes in the joint are best caught early. If the dentist spots a problem in time, correction can begin before the pain becomes chronic. A CT scan shows the condition of the bony structures of the joint, so the dentist makes decisions based on a clear picture rather than guesswork.
The cost depends on the scope of the scan. A CT scan of one joint costs 700 UAH, and a paired scan of the right and left joints costs 1,100 UAH. Both joints are scanned when they need to be compared to each other and checked for symmetry. The price is fixed, with no extra charges beyond the price list. If you are planning orthodontic treatment, the cost of the joint scan can be included in the overall estimate.
A jaw joint CT scan is available any day of the week, 9:00 to 21:00. The Eurozet location in Obolon is at 21 Levka Lukianenka St, near Minska metro station.
