You take off jewelry, hairpins and glasses, and your head is held in place in the cephalostat so the image is accurate.
The lateral view shows the facial profile, the angle of the front teeth and how the jaws relate to each other. It is the most common one.
The frontal view shows the symmetry of the left and right sides of the face. It is needed when the jaws are noticeably asymmetric.
The orthodontist measures angles and distances between landmarks on the image: a cephalometric X-ray reproduces bone dimensions 1:1, with no distortion.
From the analysis, the dentist determines the jaw growth pattern and sees whether the bite problem comes from the position of the teeth or from the size of the jaws.

When is a cephalometric X-ray needed?
Before orthodontic treatment: braces, removable plates or clear aligners. Also to assess the position of the upper and lower jaws, to determine the direction of facial growth in children and teenagers, and to find the cause of a bite problem. A cephalometric X-ray is also taken before surgical bite correction and to check the results of orthodontic treatment.
What is the difference between the lateral and frontal views?

What radiation dose does the patient receive?

A panoramic X-ray (OPG) shows the teeth and roots but distorts the proportions of the skull bones. A cephalometric X-ray reproduces true dimensions 1:1, which the orthodontist needs for the analysis. Together, these two images give the dentist the full picture.
Do children get cephalometric X-rays?
Yes. A cephalometric X-ray is often ordered at age 7–10 to catch jaw growth problems early and start orthodontic correction in time.
When will the results be ready?
The digital image is generated 1–2 minutes after the scan. The dentist gets the file for analysis right away.

Why combine a cephalometric and a panoramic X-ray
A panoramic X-ray (OPG) and a cephalometric X-ray answer different questions. The OPG shows the condition of the teeth, developing teeth and bone, and it reveals cavities. The cephalometric X-ray shows how the jaws are positioned in space. Together, these two images give the orthodontist the full diagnostic picture. That is why tooth movement can be planned safely and predictably before braces or clear aligners are even fitted.
How the orthodontist reads a cephalometric X-ray
On the image, the dentist marks anatomical landmarks and measures the angles and distances between them. This is the cephalometric analysis. It shows where the bite problem comes from: the wrong position of individual teeth or the size of the jaw bones themselves. The answer determines which appliance the orthodontist chooses. That is why a cephalometric X-ray is taken before treatment starts, not during it.
