An inlay is placed when an old large filling has darkened, cracked or no longer fits tightly against the tooth.
The dentist removes the decayed tissue and the old filling and shapes an even seat for the inlay.
The shape of the prepared tooth is sent to the dental lab via a digital scan or an impression.
The E-max ceramic inlay takes about a week to make, with the shade matched to the neighboring teeth. A temporary filling covers the tooth in the meantime.
After a try-in and a bite check, the inlay is bonded in place and the edges are polished.

Why is an inlay better than a regular filling?
A large filling shrinks over time, and a micro-gap appears at the margin with the tooth. An inlay is made in a lab, so it fits more tightly, matches the shape more precisely and keeps its volume.
How is an inlay different from a crown?
For a crown, the tooth is ground down on all sides. An inlay replaces only the damaged area. If the walls of the tooth are strong, the dentist chooses an inlay; if most of the tooth is gone, a crown.
How many visits does it take?
Usually two: at the first visit the dentist prepares the tooth and takes a scan, and at the second the inlay is bonded. About a week passes between the visits.
How is a dental inlay different from a post and core?
A ceramic inlay rebuilds the visible part of the tooth. A post and core builds a support inside the root canal for a future crown.
When is an inlay not an option?
If all the walls of the tooth are destroyed, there is a vertical root crack or active inflammation at the root tip. In that case the dentist will suggest a crown, a post and core or another option.
How do I care for an inlay?
No special care is needed: brush twice a day, use floss or a water flosser, and have a checkup every 6 months.

My husband and I take care of our teeth all the time. We were treated at a German dental practice, then a Turkish one, so we have something to compare with. We came to Eurozet with a difficult situation: after the Turkish doctors, the implants weren't taking, and they had to clean twice because small fragments were left after poorly cleaned sites from tooth extractions. They fixed it, cleaned it, the implants took, and only the final touch is left — the crowns. My husband damaged his upper teeth with an angle grinder, and doctors at three other practices didn't know what to do; here they did everything properly, and for half a year now he has been eating perfectly well. When it is time to replace a filling with an inlay
If the same filling on a tooth is being redone for the third time, it may be time for a more reliable solution. An inlay is worth considering when an old large filling has darkened, cracked or no longer fits tightly, or when a wall or chewing cusp has chipped off. Another case is a tooth after root canal treatment that is at risk of chipping under load. Patching the tooth with yet another large filling only postpones the problem.
Why the bite check after bonding matters
Even a precisely made inlay has to meet the neighboring teeth and the teeth in the opposite jaw correctly. Inaccurate contact points are the most common cause of discomfort and chipping. That is why after bonding the dentist separately checks the bite and polishes the edges. E-max ceramic wears at a rate close to enamel, so with a correct bite the inlay does not damage the teeth it meets.
What determines the price of an inlay
The price depends on the extent of the damage and the area the inlay replaces. The dentist quotes the exact amount, including the lab stage, after the exam and before preparing the tooth, so there are no extra charges at the end. If the damage turns out to be greater than it seemed, the dentist will suggest another option and agree on a new estimate before starting.
