A post and core is used when more than half of the visible part of the tooth is gone. The dentist checks the root and the canal filling on an X-ray or CT scan.
Part of the canal filling is removed to the required depth to create a seat for the post.
The shape of the canal is sent to the dental lab, where the metal or zirconia post and core is usually made in 3–7 business days.
The post and core is fitted and cemented in place. It matches the shape of the canal and spreads the load evenly across the root.
Once the post and core is cemented, an impression is taken and a crown is placed on the core.

Frequently asked questions
How is a post and core different from a pin with a filling?
A pin and a filling are two structures with different properties, and over time they can separate. A post and core is one piece, made to fit the canal, so it spreads pressure evenly.
Does placing a post and core hurt?
By this stage the tooth no longer has a nerve, and if needed the dentist works under local anesthesia. Usually you only feel the touch of the instruments and slight pressure.
How long does it take to make a post and core?
Usually 3 to 7 business days, depending on the material and the lab's workload. If needed, a temporary restoration is placed in the meantime.
Can a post and core be placed on any tooth?
No. It needs a stable root with no cracks, cysts or mobility and with properly filled canals. If the root is broken below the gum line or has a vertical crack, the dentist will suggest another option.
Metal or zirconia post and core?
A metal one made of cobalt-chrome alloy is suitable for back teeth. Zirconia is chosen for the smile zone: it does not show through a metal-free crown.
How do I care for a tooth with a post and core?
No special care is needed: brush twice a day, use a water flosser or floss, and have a checkup every 6 months.

Can a tooth be saved if only the root is left
If almost nothing is left of the visible part of the tooth, that is not yet a reason to pull it. When the root is stable, with no cracks, cysts or mobility, and the canals are properly filled, it can still serve as a base. A post and core builds a support inside the canal, and a crown is placed on top. The tooth can then take part in chewing again. The dentist will determine from a periapical X-ray or CT scan whether your tooth can be saved.
Why a tooth needs support after root canal treatment
After the nerve is removed, the tooth no longer gets nourishment from the inside. Its tissues gradually lose moisture and become brittle. Such a tooth handles pressure poorly and can chip along a wall even during normal chewing. A large filling is a less reliable support here, while a post and core takes the load and transfers it evenly to the root. That is why it is best not to put off a restoration after root canal treatment.
What determines the price of a post and core
The price depends on the material and the number of roots. A cast metal post and core is more affordable; zirconia costs more but does not show through a metal-free crown. A single-canal post and core is simpler to make than a split one for a multi-rooted tooth. The dentist quotes the exact amount after diagnostics.
