After the upper back teeth are lost, the bone shrinks and the floor of the maxillary sinus drops. There is not enough bone height for an implant.
On a 3D CT scan, the dentist measures the bone thickness, checks the maxillary sinus and chooses the closed or open technique.
The surgeon carefully lifts the sinus lining (the Schneiderian membrane).
The space under the lifted membrane is filled with certified bone graft granules.
The implant is placed right away, or microsutures are placed. Most of the swelling goes down in 3–5 days.

What is the difference between an open and a closed sinus lift?
A closed sinus lift is done through the future implant site, when you have at least 4–5 mm of your own bone. An open sinus lift is done through a small side window in the bone, when there is less than 4 mm of bone.
Can an implant be placed at the same time as a sinus lift?
With a closed sinus lift and enough stability, the implant is placed during the same surgery. With an open sinus lift and significant bone loss, the dentist sometimes advises waiting 4–6 months for the bone graft to integrate.
Does a sinus lift hurt?
The surgery is done under local anesthesia. If you are very anxious or the procedure is extensive, it can be done under sedation.
How long does recovery take?
Most of the swelling goes down in 3–5 days. The dentist will prescribe a medication plan: antibiotics, painkillers and nasal drops.
What are the restrictions after the procedure?
For 2–3 weeks, do not fly, do not dive, avoid intense workouts and saunas, and do not blow your nose hard. This keeps the bone graft from shifting.
When is a sinus lift postponed?
In case of acute or flared-up chronic sinusitis, polyps or cysts in the sinus, uncontrolled diabetes, or after radiation therapy to the head and neck. The dentist makes the decision after a 3D CT scan.

Good afternoon! I want to thank the surgeon Viacheslav Vasylovych: a very attentive, calm and reliable doctor. The patient, my 80-year-old mom, came out after having 2 teeth removed feeling like she had wings. She said nobody had ever worked with her teeth so gently. I'd like to add: nothing unnecessary, quick, all X-rays taken on the spot (in the treatment room), and a detailed medical history taken before anesthesia. Why there is not enough bone in the upper jaw for an implant
After the upper back teeth are lost, the bone in this area gradually shrinks and the floor of the maxillary sinus drops. Age-related changes or a traumatic extraction in the past can have the same effect. As a result, there is not enough bone height to anchor an implant securely, and it cannot be placed without preparation. A sinus lift restores the needed bone volume and creates a base for the implant and, later, for a crown or a bridge.
Open or closed: what determines the cost of a sinus lift
The dentist chooses the technique based on how much bone has been lost: a closed sinus lift is less invasive, while an open one is needed when the bone loss is greater. Per the price list, a closed sinus lift costs from 5,000 to 10,000 UAH, and an open one from 15,000 to 30,000 UAH. The exact price is calculated from the 3D CT scan and also depends on the amount of bone graft material. Anesthesia, related materials, follow-up checks and stitches are included in the treatment plan, and the price is confirmed before surgery.
Why a CT scan is needed before a sinus lift
A 3D scan shows what cannot be seen during an exam: the thickness of the bone ridge to the millimeter, the condition of the maxillary sinus lining and its anatomical features. Based on this, the surgeon chooses the safest technique, plans the amount of bone graft and decides whether the implant can be placed during the same surgery. The final decision on whether a sinus lift is possible is also made after the CT scan and an assessment of your general health.
